County supervisors will be asked to rename part of Weirick Road by the developer of Dos Lagos, who wants the growing community in southern Corona to have a street name to match.
The Riverside County Board of Supervisors will schedule a public hearing in the coming weeks to consider the proposal, county officials said. SE Corporation, the Corona planning and development firm that's building Dos Lagos, is asking for the portion of Weirick Road east of Interstate 15 to be renamed Dos Lagos Drive.
In return, SE Corporation will install a plaque honoring Arthur Weirick near Dos Lagos' lakes.
The proposal won the blessing of Jane Larson, whose late father Arthur Weirick was the road's namesake. She's not sure why that street was named in his honor, since his land -- a Corona avocado and naval orange ranch -- was several miles northwest.
"It was just a little dirt road out there at that time," said Larson, 79.
Weirick served a partial term on the Riverside County Board of Supervisors, and she guessed his board colleagues might have bestowed the honor on her father for his government service.
Weirick's board tenure ran from 1946 to 1949, and he served on the Western Municipal Water District board of directors from 1960 to 1972. The district now serves 22,000 customers in Corona, Norco, Riverside and other communities in its 510-square-mile area.
Weirick Road is the southern boundary of Dos Lagos, a 543-acre master-planned community -- also bordered by Temescal Canyon Road and Interstate 15 -- that eventually will include a hotel, senior housing, office buildings and "live-work" townhomes.
SE Corporation President Ali Sahabi submitted the name change request to Riverside County in August. The Dos Lagos Drive portion would measure about 1/3-mile, between Interstate 15 and Temescal Canyon Road.
Under the proposal, the Weirick name would remain on the stretch of road west of the freeway in Temescal Valley.
Because Weirick Road is an entry and exit point of Interstate 15, SE Corporation also must ask Caltrans to change the freeway signs to include the Dos Lagos Drive name.
